After Jerusalem

By Aaron Bushkowsky

Romance, intrigue, and a smattering of old movies turns this Jessie-nominated comedy into a quirky love story where anything can happen.

A down-on-her-luck, middle-aged school teacher tries to find love in Israel by pretending to be a famous actress.  When she runs into a wannabe script-writer soldier with many tall tales to tell, their lives intertwine and change forever.

Do you want to see some artists having a really good time? 'After Jerusalem' is a banquet of pleasure. Playwright Aaron Bushkowsky and actors Deborah Williams and Andrew McNee don't just chow down on the material, they roll around in it.

Bushkowsky's script is teeming with cultural references, both high and low, and it's playfully metatheatrical: the same way that characters in musicals burst into song to express their deepest feelings, Carol and Vladimir burst into enactments of everything from old Dracula movies to Casablanca.

Live theatre can be hit or miss. This is definitely hit.

Actors Deb Williams and Andrew McNee are so perfect as Carol and Vladimir in 'After Jerusalem', it's hard to imagine Vancouver playwright Aaron Bushkowsky writing the play without them in mind.

It's so darned charming and funny and clever.
