Ben Elliott

Playwright

Ben Elliott is an award-winning writer, composer, lyricist, and music supervisor based in Vancouver, BC.

Ben’s foray into writing began while attending theatre school at Studio 58, where he and fellow students Hannah Johnson and Anton Lipovetsky teamed up to create the critically acclaimed musical The Park. Ben and Anton later joined forces with Governor General’s Award-winning playwright Vern Thiessen to create The Best Laid Plans: A Musical, which premiered in Vancouver in the fall of 2015 and won an Ovation Award for Outstanding New Work.

Ben has also collaborated with award-winning playwright Fatuma Adar as composer and lyricist on Marigold, which was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Musical. He also served as arranger and music supervisor for Fatuma’s one-woman show She’s Not Special.

Another notable achievement is Ben’s music supervision for Daryl Cloran’s adaptation of As You Like It, featuring the music of The Beatles. The hit show has toured major theatres across Canada and the United States, including Bard on the Beach, The Citadel, The Grand, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Milwaukee Rep, and the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC.

Most recently, Ben arranged and music supervised A Midsummer Night’s Dream: The 70s Musical, created by Daryl Cloran and Kayvon Khoshkam, which premiered at The Citadel in 2025.

Ben holds a degree in Philosophy from Bishop’s University and is a graduate of the acting program at Studio 58.

Currently, Ben is collaborating with Anton Lipovetsky on a new musical commissioned by The Arts Club — details coming soon!

You couldn’t ask for a more accessible Shakespearean play, and the music is a perfect fit for the story — kudos to music director Ben Elliott. Under Elliott’s supervision and direction, the arrangements are an absolute pleasure to listen to and make the story even more engaging, thanks to clever re-imaginings of the songs that reconfigure solos into duets, and add impactful choral moments.

Kudos to Elliott for his sound design, superb musical direction and tasty Jerry Lee Lewis licks on keyboard.
