About Marquis Literary

Marquis Literary is the Literary Representation division of Marquis Entertainment (founded in 1996).

Marquis Literary manages, represents and promotes a select roster of writers, composers and directors within Canada and international markets, with a specialized focus on commercial development opportunities for the stage.

Marquis Literary is proud of its longstanding associations with commercial and first-class regional theatre producers throughout Canada, the US, the UK, Germany, Poland, Australia, Japan and beyond.

Founded 20 years ago on the belief that Canadian plays and musicals were underrepresented on the world stage, Marquis Literary has gone on create new markets for Canadian theatrical work in nearly 50 countries including extended commercial runs in the West End of London, Off Broadway NYC, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Berlin, Sydney, San Francisco, Boston, as well as mainstage regional runs in every major city in Canada, the US and Europe.

Marquis prides itself on its longstanding association with the select roster of playwrights, composers and directors it represents as well as its collaboration with thousands of producing theatre companies and a growing number of film/tv producers the world over.

Milestones

  • 2001 – Marquis Entertainment begins licensing Canadian plays/musicals under option, including a West End premiere

  • 2008/2009 – Marquis Literary launched with a small group of new literary clients, still operating as a division under Marquis Entertainment

  • 2013/2014 – Marquis Literary begins a strategic expansion, licensing 50 productions this season

  • 2016/2017 – Marquis Literary website launches with 40 playwrights and composers

  • 2018/2019 – Marquis Literary grows to 70 clients, and licenses 125 productions this season including its second West End premiere

  • 2020/2021 – Marquis Literary continues to operate will its full team through the global pandemic

  • 2024/2025 – Marquis Literary grows to 100+ clients, and licenses nearly 300 productions this season including two Off-Broadway premieres and a hit tv series
