Susanna Fournier

Playwright / Screenwriter

"I construct texts as maps with which to encounter aliveness. I compose with the total theatrical apparatus to author visceral, ritualized, theatrical experiences that wake us up out of our assumptions and into mysterious spaces within our spirits and the cosmos.” - Susanna

Susanna Fournier is an award-winning Canadian theatre-maker, actor/director, and performance educator. Her work straddles acting and creating in television, film, and stage. She’s known in Canadian theatre for her formally provocative performance texts and interdisciplinary productions. In 2018/19, Susanna’s company, PARADIGM productions, produced her critically acclaimed trilogy, The Empire, across three Toronto venues, as a radio-drama podcast series online, and as a complete reader edition published through Playwrights Canada Press. Her theatre-making has been seen at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Canadian Stage, Luminato, Theatre Centre, TO Live, as well as in London UK, Munich, and Berlin. Susanna is a two-time nominee for the KM Hunter Award, a finalist for the Toronto Arts Foundation Emerging Artist Award, and a Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize nominee. Since 2022, she’s been the Artistic Director of Armstrong Acting Studios where she shapes performance pedagogy and coaches Canada’s premiere on screen talent. She’s also a guest artist/director at Toronto Metropolitan University, Etobicoke School of the Arts, and Cawthra Park Secondary School where she seeks to radicalize artistic practice and make work that’s wildly relevant to today’s emerging artists. When she isn’t writing or directing she’s meditating, travelling, hanging out with cats, or dancing.

Susanna is a writer of startling capacity. She brings an unequivocal and piercing insight to the failures of the dominant systems that entrap us. Her writing is fierce, funny, and hugely ambitious, and full of craft.

There are ambitious independent theatre-makers and then there’s Susanna Fournier.

Fournier is now pushing her skill and scope as a playwright to new levels.

(Praise for The Empire:)

The Empire represents a thrilling theatrical vision quite unlike any writing I know of in Canada. There is no one writing at the same theatrical/inventive pitch as Susanna, or attempting to so viscerally synthesize so much history.
