Sunny Drake

Playwright

Sunny Drake's inventive and award-winning theatre works have been presented in over 60 cities and translated into 6 languages. His wide range of audiences have spanned international arts festivals goers, queers in underground warehouses and seniors in regional theatres.

His comedy, Every Little Nookie, was a hit of the 2022 Stratford Festival and he won a national Tom Hendry comedy award for the script in 2021. His verbatim work, CHILD-ish, was produced by Pacific Theatre (Vancouver 2024) and will receive a second production at Tarragon (Toronto, 2025). In 2023, he led 100 artists in 9 international cities to create a podcast of audio dramas, Climate Change & Other Small Talk. For this project, he won Professional Association of Canadian Theatre’s Green Award (2024), Best Comedy Podcast of the Year from the American Writing Awards (2024), several Signal Awards (2023) and was ranked in Apple Podcast’s top ten for numerous countries. His comedy, Men Experess Their Feelings, had 4 productions across Canada, described by the Calgary Herald as “an instant Canadian classic”.

Sunny was invited by the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres to write the 2019 World Theatre Day message for Canada, he was awarded the inaugural Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize 2019 for having a significant impact on performing arts in Ontario, and he was described by Broadway World as “one of Canada’s brightest playwrights”. He has held Fellowships with Yaddo, Ucross, Djerassi, Banff, The Arctic Circle onboard a tall ship, and many others. He is currently developing new plays with the Lucille Lortel Theatre (New York), Zee Zee Theatre (Vancouver), and The Geffen (Los Angeles).
