Alex Poch-Goldin

Playwright

Alex’s plays have been produced internationally to critical acclaim. His work has been produced in Toronto at Canadian Stage, Tarragon Theatre, Factory Theatre, Theatre Passe-Muraille, Buddies in Bad Times, as well as Royal MTC, Winnipeg Jewish Theatre, No Name Players in Pittsburgh, and two German national tours by Theater Gastpiele-Kempt.

Alex’s titles include the hits The Bad Luck Bank RobbersThe Right Road To Pontypool, and The Great Shadow (4th Line theatre); Yahrzeit (Toronto Jewish Playwriting Award/German national tour); The Life of Jude (Theatre Passe Muraille), Jim & Shorty (Summerworks/Factory), Security (Tarragon), The Latke Ladies (Royal MTC) and Louie’s Dilemma (WJT). His plays Cringeworthy and This Hotel were nominated for Dora Awards for Outstanding New Play, and he is the recipient of Infinite Theatre’s Kevin Tierney Prize for his play Make Up. Alex was a nominee for the prestigious Siminovitch Prize for playwriting for his play Cringeworthy.

Alex’s opera The Shadow (book and libretto) was produced by Tapestry New Opera in Toronto. He has also created libretti for Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth, Joris-Karl Huysman’s Against Nature and E.M. Forster’s The Machine Stops, with choreographer James Kudelka and the Citadel Dance Co. He has developed projects for CBC Radio, and Bravo Television.

His latest play the The Trial of William Shakespeare explores putting The Merchant of Venice on trial for antisemitism. He is the Playwright in Residence for Winnipeg Jewish Theatre and is currently working on a commission for Royal MTC. Alex is also an award-winning stage actor in addition to working extensively in film and television.
