Development History
Murder in a Small Town is based on the B.C.-set Karl Alberg mystery series written by L. R. Wright. It was adapted for television in 2023, produced by Sepia Films in association with Fox Entertainment and Future Shack Entertainment. Vancouver-based Soapbox Productions originally optioned the series with Soapbox’s Nick Orchard serving as an executive producer along with Morris Ruskin, Sharon Wisnia, Joe Cotton and B.C. novelist Ian Weir, who also serves as head writer.
The series stars Rossif Sutherland (Reign) and Kristin Kreuk (Smallville) and follows Sutherland’s detective character as he tries to solve a series of murders in a small town.
The series saw its first season air on Fox and Corus’s Global on Sept. 24, 2024. Murder in a Small Town was Global’s top Canadian series of 2024. The series was among the top new three shows for Fox content on Hulu and for all Fox 2024-25 season content on the streamer, according to a Thursday (Jan. 16, 2025) release from Fox. Fox commissioned the B.C.-shot drama in 2023 for its 2024 season.

ITV holds international rights for the series outside the U.S. and Canada.
