The Best Laid Plans: A Musical

Based on the novel by Terry Fallis

By Vern Thiessen

Music and Lyrics by Anton Lipovetsky & Benjamin Elliott

Based on Terry Fallis’ award winning novel, The Best Laid Plans: a Musical follows Daniel Addison: a hapless speechwriter who convinces a crusty old Scot named Angus to let his name stand in an election he’s sure to lose. But their best laid plans go hilariously awry and they create irreversible controversy in the bizarre world of Canadian politics.

This witty, fast paced two hour musical comedy is a collaboration between Governor General’s Award-winning playwright Vern Thiessen and Jessie Award-winning composers and lyricists Ben Elliott & Anton Lipovetsky. Its score of over fifteen songs features show stopping parodies of all things Canadian along with stirring anthems. Thiessen’s dialogue is sharp and the book contains many memorable characters, including some hilarious cameos of prominent Canadians. It is performed by an ensemble of ten actors (five male, five female) and accompanied by a five-piece band.
